FARMERS looking to enter
free range egg production
on a commercial scale will
be interested in an original
concept from farmer and
engineer Ken Ford, of
Chawleigh
Ken and his brother Colin
manufacture and erect farm
buildings but this is a
building with a difference.
The 80ft by 46ft unit is on
skids and has a capacity for
3,000 free range laying hens.
It has a plastic slatted floor
with an Indoor scratching
area and after a year on one
part at a field may be
winched to a fresh area
leaving the droppings
behind.
The unit is supplied with
electricity via solar panels
and a wind turbine and has a
new design natural
ventilation system.
The system in use at East
Moortown, Chawleigh, was
stocked with ISA Brown pullets
at the end of January which
are now at peak lay.
Production is
contracted with Stonegate
An Open Day is scheduled for
Friday, May 17 2002,
from 10am - 5pm. Further details
in next week's Journal. |
